OUR CLIMATE REQUIRES ACTION

Fridays For Future, does this sound familiar? In Valencia, this week we are having demonstrations against climate change. Then, I asked my students about their knowledge on climate change or the ecological crisis we are suffering since media is not reporting on this matter. Teacher emergency!

Here you have an interesting activity to get down to serious work to prevent climate change. This activity is addressed to students in 3rd or 4th year of ESO. Hope you enjoy it!

Greta Thunberg in TEDxStockholm

If they are supporting the strike, they should know everything in this video. Then, you can challenge them, it always works! This video provides the students with the general idea of what we should do to prevent this climate emergency.

Before we watch the video, students require knowledge of the overall picture. Then, follow these instructions:

  1. Match important words that appear in Greta’s speech to the appropriate definition.
  2. Time to think yourselves! Write a description or a synonym of the concepts that Greta mentions in the video. I worked these two cooperatively, all the students were working together and it was interesting and very clear.
  3. We watch the first 6 minutes of the video and we answer the comprehension questions. We read the questions to guarantee they understood everything and at this point they were interested enough so to watch the video.
  4. We watch the remaining 5 minutes of the video and we have a debate. Then, they have time to summarize their ideas in a short paragraph.

We hope you like this activity. Here you find the pdf document attached:
